I'm back to looking at Miatas again *facepalm*

JayhawkJake reminded me the other day that a cheap "beater" Miata is still cheaper than a full exhaust and tune on my Sportwagen so... yeah. There is no arguing with that. Also, the fact that if something on the VW breaks it will basically bankrupt me but if something on a Miata breaks you can *probably* replace it for relatively cheap!

Ideal Miata:

Just with less stance and more gunmetal grey wheels!

???

I wouldn't be getting rid of the JSW, just getting a second car (the Miata) to mod and beat on because it would be cheaper to run and repair if something breaks

A beater Miata is going to be a money pit. It'll either have trouble passing inspection, Have title issues, or have a shit body.

Don't do it. It's not as simple as buying another car. You have to fuel it, maintain it, fix it, insure it, register it, possibly get a title, it's a huge process. Take the cost of the car and multiply it by three, and that's what you're dealing with.

UNLESS.

Do what I'm wanting to do and just store it, don't insure it, register it, or tag it, and just tow it to autocross events (note that this would require buying a car dolly to tow it with)

No, he bought a bit of a basket case it sounds like. My grandfather has a 1994 Mariner Blue one (like the one in the picture) with 260k miles on and it hasn't skipped a beat yet! It is a bit loose compared to a new one, but it is still a hoot to drive.

The guy who wrote that article must've done something wrong.

How long has he had it?

I wouldn't be too sure, I've heard a fair share of Miata horror stories.

WHAT? It wouldn't be that expensive ($5400 to buy and register a $2.3k Miata? Really?)

Also, gas is cheap, insurance would be cut in half for the JSW (around $300 per month right now I think) and the Miata would be around $100 / month to insure on my parent/grandparent's insurance. Also, maintenance wouldn't be all that complicated (hopefully)

He bought it new for my uncle when he graduated in 94, got it back in 2006, has been daily driving it since. Drive train (except for clutch) is all original, never rebuilt.

Hmmmm, Sounds like it wasn't driven hard?

I personally dislike the Miata, plus I'm too tall for that shit.

Oh I wouldn't say that! My uncle autocrossed it occasionally and my uncle takes it on roadtrips and such a lot. It hasn't lived an easy life to say the least

I love that Miata. It is fun to drive, revs to the moon (comparatively lol), and the shifter is SOOOO notchy *which is a +*

In around 6 months if I have the money (hopefully around $2.5k for the car, $1k for everything else.)

Does that money figure sound about right for a semi decent NA on CL?

I got mine for $2200 with 80k and one owner but $2500 should allow for one with decent miles and in good condition.

Not just to buy and register, but to buy, register, and fix all the shit that's likely wrong with it/account for any unforseen issues, which are a huge risk with older cars.

Also miatas are played out as fuck.

Also $300 per month what the actual fuck . That's insane. I'm only paying ~$62 per month on the LeSabre. Jesus. Then again, drivers education discount + defensive driving class discount + 'good student' discount = yay

Kinja'd!!!0

I should have all of those... I'm guesstimating the amount there. Probably closer to $200 per month in actuallity with comprehensive also...

Said Miata would be in decent condition (one of my requirements) and in good running condition. All in all it would be cheaper to just buy a $2.5k miata, register and insure it, and fix a couple of things than to mod my car... and fix it if it breaks. Keep that in mind

I still think you should do something other than a Miata, but I'm a hopeless hipster. MR2 or Fiero, maybe? A 3000GT (they're really reliable as long as you don't miss an oil change or scheduled belt replacement)?
